Greetings Epics Collectors!
I wanted to take a quick moment to discuss our upcoming 2019 season with you. Many of you have been eagerly asking when the set will launch — we’re excited by your enthusiasm and we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get into your hands.
What we’ve figured out…
We’ve learned a lot over our Founders and 2018 seasons. We’ve spoken to many of you on Discord, our support channel, via user surveys and also by digging into the data to see how you’re using the app and where you’d like to see us change the experience. 2019 is going to introduce some pretty big changes as part of our efforts to make Epics the ultimate collecting experience for fans.
The road to 2019
I want to share some timing updates with you for the 2019 launch. Our creative team is hard at work on some pretty insanely amazing new card and pack designs. Many of you have justifiably asked why we haven’t launched the season yet and there are some pretty simple answers to that question.
First, we’ve been working with our partner teams to secure photography for the card sets. Most photography sessions occur during the first major event of the year, so January or February launch dates would require recycling photos from 2018 — that’s not something we felt was worthy of our collectors.
Second, many teams planned roster changes around the Major time period and we wanted to avoid releasing a 2019 card set that would immediately need to be revised due to roster swaps. Roster changes can cause difficult situations where certain player cards (even common types) become extremely rare due to their limited number of minting runs. This creates a situation where many people can’t complete their collections due to these artificially rare cards, which isn’t the best outcome for collectors. We decided that the best time to launch the new season is after rosters are locked (2–3 weeks post Major) to avoid these issues as much as possible at the start of the season.
We’ll review this decision over the coming months and assess whether we think it was the right call. We will apply any learnings to future seasons as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the Epics experience. We appreciate your patience with us as we go through the learning process.
Lastly, we’ve made some pretty extensive changes to the structure of the 2019 collection to take into account our upcoming card crafting feature. Crafting is something that we’ve been putting a ton of effort into planning and developing as a core feature of the Epics app. Our biggest point of feedback from our collectors since we launched Epics is that you want more things to ‘do’ with your cards and more ways to earn cards without having to pay. We completely agree.
Crafting will enable collectors to combine duplicate cards to build a random higher tier card. There are many more nuances to the feature, but that’s the basics. Because crafting is a core part of the new collection structure, we want it to be ready before we launch 2019. We feel that your experience will be better that way, and that’s ultimately the most important thing to Epics’ success in the long run.
Now that we’ve covered all the changes coming it’s time to finally get to when you can expect 2019 to launch. We’re targeting April 15th to unveil the new season to the world. To whet your appetite we’ve shared some of the new designs below. I hope you’ll agree that 2019 will be worth the wait…
