TL;DR

  • Epics collectors can now turn any of our items into Ethereum tokens and trade them to third party wallets, trading sites. This will cost a small fee in Epicoins
  • Our 2019 Midnights set will be the first tokenized items available
  • We’re partnering with Opensea to auction off the 6 lowest mint Midnight cards from this year’s collection. The auctions start today and end on different dates depending on the card. You will need Ethereum to bid. We’ve given you plenty of time to get set up with some ETH so you can bid. Links to each auction are provided below
  • You can get started with Ethereum by reviewing this primer here: https://ethereum.org/beginners/

====================================

Hello again Collectors,

As many of you already know, today is Midnight drop day! Today is the day our rarest drop hits the shop. We’ve also been teasing some additional news over the past week and we’re finally ready to share it with our community.

This year’s Midnights will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Epics and for esports. They will be the first blockchain enabled esports collectibles in history. It’s always been our vision to immortalize the players, teams and events that make esports great and this is the next step in making that vision a reality.

We’ve partnered with the leading Ethereum collectibles marketplace OpenSea to help us launch our first tokenized cards with a bang. We’ll be auctioning off the the 1/15 cards for each Midnight from this year’s set starting today. The full details of the auctions are below.

The Auction

  • Each card will be separately auctioned on www.opensea.io
  • The auctions will all begin on Monday October 21st at 6PM CEST / 9AM PST
  • Each auction will end on a different day starting on Wednesday October 28th and running until Tuesday October 29th, so check the listings to see when the auction you want to participate in will end.
  • The starting bid will be 0 Ethereum. That’s right. 0. So don’t feel afraid to get some ETH and bid because you never know who will bid and how much these will end up going for.
  • You will need Ethereum in order to participate in the auction — we’ve given ample time for you to set up a wallet and get some to participate in the auction if you wish to. If you need more info on how to do this you can learn more here: https://ethereum.org/beginners/

You can check out the auctions on OpenSea here: https://opensea.io/accounts/0xd7b62b4ca8627f4c39c3bd8028c3308142faf528

More Info on Our New Blockchain Feature

Now it’s time to dig into more detail for those of you who are still reading this. For people who know about crypto and blockchain this should be pretty straight forward, but for those new to the space it can seem a bit foreign to begin with.

The key thing to remember is that this feature makes Epics cards more secure, gives you more ownership and control over them and makes them compatible with more third party services.

We imagine seeing one of our cards selling in a virtual auction house 100 years from now in the same way legendary sports cards have over the last 100 years (like the baseball card below). Everything we do at Epics is meant to align with this goal and to give you, the collector, the opportunity to own a piece of history.

Blockchain Features

Interoperability

We’ve spent the past year and a half building what we think is a pretty good experience for collecting, trading and sharing digital objects. But, we haven’t yet accomplished one of our main goals: To make Epics collectibles transferrable across multiple platforms, apps and services. We’ve been hard at work to make this happen and today marks our first announcement. The Ethereum ERC-721 token standard allows us to make our digital objects automatically interoperable with hundreds of third party apps, marketplaces and wallets that support Ethereum. This number is growing every day. This will mean that your Epics items will continue to gain more value, usefulness and flexibility as the blockchain universe grows.

Security and Ownership

We’ve always taken the stance that Epics items should be just like real objects — if you buy them they’re yours. You should be able to transfer them to different services and keep them long into the future. Blockchain support allows us to take a big step in this direction.

Blockchains are completely distributed ownership systems — this means that no central authority can control access to them or take items away from their owner. In the future more and more of the internet will be powered by blockchains and distributed applications, so we feel it’s important for Epics to be part of this shift and to provide our collectibles to our customers in a way that they can realize the true ownership and control over them.

This will take time and occur over multiple steps and iterations, but this is the north star that guides our decisions and roadmap.

We’ve included an FAQ below for more information and as always you can feel free to reach out to our support in the app if you need help.

Thanks again for your support,

Team Epics

FAQ

What Epics items can I tokenize?

  • Any Epics item you want!

How do I tokenize a card?

  • You can tokenize any card in your library by going to the card view and selecting the Ethereum icon
  • Note: Some rare and limited edition Epics items will be tokenized at the time they are minted in our system. If you have one of these you will see an icon indicating it’s tokenized

Why doesn’t Epics tokenize all cards on the blockchain?

  • There are a couple of simple reasons: Scale and cost. Epics has already distributed 7.5 million packs and over 30 million cards to our collectors. There is currently no widely used public blockchain that could support those types of numbers and the amount of transactions our collectors make per day. That may change in the future as new technology is released and we’re actively keeping an eye on several projects, but right now it’s just not feasible. Second, it costs ETH for every transaction on the public chain. We do our best to minimize these costs, but there’s no way around at least some cost for having items on chain. The majority of Epics cards are commons — these don’t really make sense to put on chain and have them cost 20 cents to trade with your friend (and take up to 5 minutes to transfer). However, a 2019 dev1ce 1/15 Midnight certainly does merit those costs for the additional security and ownership provided by blockchain tech.

How much does it cost to tokenize a card?

  • We’re setting the cost at 250 Epicoins to begin with. This will cover the cost of the initial minting of the token and the cost of moving it in and out of third party wallets. We may change this cost in the future depending on how the economics evolve and what we learn.

What cards can I tokenize?

  • You can tokenize anything your heart desires as long as you have 250 Epicoins you’re willing to part with to do it.

How do I withdraw a tokenized item to my external Ethereum wallet?

  • First you will need to verify your Ethereum wallet on Epics using Metamask. This may sound difficult, but it’s pretty ez for the PC master race
  • Once you tokenize an item and verify your ETH wallet you will see a new icon that has the Ethereum logo and an arrow on it — just tap that and confirm (Note: You must have a wallet address verified to withdraw an item. Follow the instructions provided in the app to create and verify your wallet)
